Hariguem Zaboy is just a project when we were in the high school. We just wanted to perform at the auditorium of our school, covered the songs from the band we like. Nothing in our head that time. Just make it fun. But we did it quite better than we expected. After that, we started trying to write our own song.
When did you start playing guitar?
Maybe when I was 14. It's quite late if compare with my sibling. My family is a musician family. Classic songs from The Beatles, The Who and Carpenters were around the house since I can remember. It's easier to be interested in pop music and pick up some guitar when you were in that circumstance.
Where did the name "Hariguem Zaboy" come from?
It's just a nonsense word that we like to say to each other just for laughing. We did a lot of meaningless things when we were in high school. And this is one of those
The band sounds a lot like My Bloody Valentine. Was that conscious? I was in university when Loveless was released!
We was born when it was released. Hahaha. Actually, they are one of our favourite bands. But we just do our own music. And they are one of our influence. That's all.
Besides shoegaze, what are some other musical influences?
I love Lo-fi Stuff. Just like music from K Records and some band like Pavement. Twee Pop is great for me too. But you know? Yo La Tengo and The Pastels is best band for me. Not MBV or any shoe gaze stuffs.
It's better in everyday. I like the way we make friends to each other. It's not important what genre of music you play. If you do good music, you can have good friends. One thing that I don't like is piracy. Someone really likes your music. They say to everyone that they are your fans, but they don't buy your work. Not only consumers are like this. Some musicians too. You can buy pirated CDs anywhere in Bangkok.
With Harmonica and Cosmic Cafe closing, where are all the underground bands going to play?
Mills, garages or parking lots are the best choice if it's possible. Actually, when somewhere closes, somewhere will be opened as a brand new great place. Just wait for it.
What are some of your favorite bands in Bangkok?
Basement Tape and Triggs and the Longest Day. You can see me dance like the mad man in front of the stages they play. Hahaha. We're the best friends because we respect the music of each other.
Now that there's a new album, any plans to tour around SE Asia? How do you think ASEAN or the ASEAn Economic Community will affect Bangkok music?
Yes, we hope that we can have that opportunity. Everywhere is closer after Facebook and YouTube have begun. And I believe that Bangkok Music is powerful enough to keep an eye on.
What international bands would you like to see perform in Bangkok?
Slowdive. I miss their tour in SEA next month for sure because of money crisis. Hahaha. Deerhunter and Yo La Tengo are also what I look forward to.
I always have the melodies about lyrics in my head. Just pick up acoustic guitar, take time and show it to bandmate to make it better.
When you play music, how do you feel?
Always fun. Just do the best I can. I'm so shy on the stage. I can't play without drinking beer. I can't sing without guitar as well.
What's the best gig you have ever had?
Stone free III is the best. Wish that Stone Free 4 will be better.
I saw you playing at Noise Market with P' Pok - what is it like working with him/ playing with him?
It will never happen again on the stage. Hahahaha. We got an accident about new bassist that day. P'Pok is the best choice that time because he is our producer. As a producer, he does a great job for us. Always supports us. You can talk to him about anything you want to make it happen with your music. A surely thing I know is he devotes things in his life for music. But as the bandmate, we look like back-up band for him, because our looks is so different. That's why it'll never happen again. Hahaha
What is the future of indie music in Bangkok?
It'll be better for sure. I quite pay attention to the sound esspecially. The next generation of kids will pay attention to the studio sound more than the past. Finally, fascinating studio albums will come out year after year.
Not only Hariguem Zaboy, I'm starting another two band as well. It's about Lo-Fi, twee pop or something like that. I'd like to do the best things for every bands I involve, and improve every day as a studio engineer. My dad support me everything to reach these goals, because they were in this career before.
I saw the video for "Anybody Feels" - whose idea was that? Did you do that with an iPhone?
Is that the motorcycle long-shot one? It's video of the song called 'Bittersweet Lullby'. Nothing special about that video. Just do it with friend, I don't intend to make it on YouTube, but my friend did. Actually it's the work of Nikon.
In 3 words, describe the music of Hariguem Zaboy.
Noisy, loud and unpredictable
Do you have a message for all of your fans?
