Notable underground rock music venues are as follows:
Fatty's Bar
Harmonica
Zoo
Haus 20
Phranakorn Mini Bar
Cosmic Cafe
Play Yard
and The Overstay.
If you are simply going out to look for live indie music, you'd best check the respective venue's facebook. A good place to start your journey is always going to be Panda Records' facebook as well as the venue Harmonica's. I also use BK Magazine as a general resource. There are so many promoters now and they do seem to rotate from venue to venue it's not worth confusing you. At the end of the day, it's about the bands and not promoters. I subscribe to every venue, promoter, and underground band in Bangkok that I can find just to stay on top of all the happenings - on top of that I subscribe to the facebook pages clubs, restaurants, pubs and just about anything related to beer, food and rock n roll.
While this blog is mainly about Bangkok underground, independent rock music and related genres, I also like jazz, electronica, craft beer, food, and a gluttony of academic subjects - everything is fair game here.
OK, let's talk music. My head is spinning from all the underground music going on NOW. It seems that every day I get some new event invite. I am also getting quite a few events confused with other events. Must sort this out. Recently, I saw Yellow Fang at Brown Sugar Playhouse withLittle Fox - what a treat! Brown Sugar Playhouse is fair game for more shows but more ventilation required. I discovered Little Fox and realized I could actually like folk music.
The local bands have been heating it up lately. Be on the lookout for new music from Matthew and the Fishes, Degaruda and Basement Tape. I've had the pleasure of seeing a ton of awe-inspiring local bands lately like Chladni Chandi, Local Machine, World Not Bad, and Stylish Nonsense. This Wednesday do not miss the aural pleasures of Panic Station, Rocket Science, and Degaruda at Play Yard. Sign up here. On Friday the 20th, you have the opportunity to witness Matt and The Fishes, Panic Station, Plastic Section and The Sangsom Massacre featuring John Will Sail live at Harmonica. Sign up here.
Who the hell are these bands you say? Check out my exclusive features down below:
Plastic Section
The Sangsom Massacre
Matthew Fischer and the Fishes
Degaruda
My list of bands to see keeps growing and I seem to only tick off a few a month. I still have yet to see Lowfat, aire, and The Sticky Rice. Every time I talk to a local music fan, they give me more bands to check out.
OK, below you will find another episode of the Songwriters forum with John Will Sail Bailey and Niall Murray of The Sangsom Massacre. This podcast was recorded before John was recruited by the Massacre to play guitar for upcoming shows. Warning: contains profanity and humor most people outside of Scotland and Australia will find disturbing. Someone forgot to take a photo at the interview at Molly Malone's and all you get is this Wine Connection pic. Sorry mom.
See you at the shows.
