This show will appeal to people that a) hate their jobs, b) hate their boss, c) hate the government. I am checking all the boxes here! (I can already sense unemployment is imminent). If you are an anti-establishment peace-mongering hippie-phile with an ironic penchant for devouring dead animal meat stuffed in tubes- than this is the show for you! Warning: not for the faint-hearted. If you have a heart condition, are pregnant, or are upset being bathed in sweat, blood and Wisconsin johnson juice, than by all means stay home and play those Barry Manilow records whilst sitting by candelight in an armchair with a Jane Austen novel. Your eardrums will bleed, the evening will turn into morning and you'll crawl into work on Monday with no memories of the weekend past... only that you woke up with no money, phone or clothes in a parking lot off of Sukhumvit. That's how you know you had a great weekend in Bangkok...
OK, now that you are sold on the show, let's talk about the bands that are going to rip your face off – not the way Wall Street derivatives traders do it – this won't leave you bleeding from the nether regions. This will rip your face off in a good way. Arguably one of the best bands in the Bangkok underground now is Degaruda – Phil, Van, Dino and Top deliver delicious crunch, aggressive melodies and heart-stopping time changes – is it math rock, hardcore pop or DC punk? I don't know – it's just Degaruda. They've got their own sound and no one can touch them. Listen to my podcast with Degaruda here. This should just be called The Over-The-Top Festival because I am struggling to put into words the visceral nature of this music event... for a few weeks now, I have been hearing about a Blood Thirst Spider Reunion – it's been a while since BTS wound you in a web, stung you, and inhaled your guts cold? Sure, I could have taken a vacation (I would need money for that) but I am glad I'm going to be here to witness BTS reunion featuring the Rollins of Bangkok, Ed Rudy, Ax and Top (of the aforementioned Degaruda). I recall seeing BTS at Overstay and thinking they must be creatures from another planet... As if that wasn't wild enough... you can catch Ed Rudy and TSOS assaulting ear drums an stirring anarchy all at the same night. Already sounding like an All Star Academy of Rock N Roll Chaos?! The conspiracy thickens.... Ben Edwards of the popular Bangkok indie rock bands, Basement Tape and Plastic Section will be performing solo – check out my post on Ben's Plastic Section here - I am quite used to hearing Ben playing with a full band so this will be cool as hell – I'm hoping to hear some soul dripping solo versions of Basement Tape and Plastic Section songs – John Lennon is in rock n roll heaven and Paul McCartney has lost his voice – at least we have Ben.... As if that wasn't enough to make your evening... there's a mysterious band called, “Drag Yula” - the real name of this band I think is Lone Moan or Blown Cone, or something that rhymes with that – look out for a new lineup from this influential stalwart of the Bangkok underground...a smashing new drummer, pelvic thrusts and aural gyrations – I'm quite looking forward to the Drag Yula set and getting my groove on with the rocking, rhythmic earthquake... but there's more! A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away there was a music bar – it was on Silom Soi 4 past the always colorful Balcony – if you made it to the end of Soi 4, you'd find Nomads (once Noriega's) – many a Bangkok band past through the friendly doors of Nomads including many of the musos you'll hear at Sausage Fest – the spirit of Nomads was encapsulated by Nomads brain child, Tambourine Man himself, Paul Williams. Come and hear Paul open the night. Before there was Fatty's, there was Nomads, a place for fans and friends of music. It was also at this Nomads, where a young Wisconsin singer songwriter and short order cook, named Matthew Fischer would host the open mic and where the dream that became Fatty's Bar & Diner fermented..... the Nomads PA and awe-inspiring Gretsch drums all mysteriously appeared at Fatty's one afternoon.... a galaxy not so far away it seems.... The Sausage Fest also includes performances by Monomania, Sticky Rice, perhaps Fatty himself ... and who knows what else.
Stay tuned for an all new Halloween podcast featuring members of Panic Station, Bone Clone, Superhans, and The Sangsom Massacre.
See you at the shows.
