This is a mysterious yet kick-ass EP crammed full of ambient shoegazing post-rock noise by a band I unfortunately never managed to see live, assuming they actually played as a proper “gig band”. Indeed the CD was passed on to me by my friend Allan who discovered it lurking in the racks of the old DJ Siam store. The LittleMatchGirl take their name from a Hans Christian Andersen short story and comprise Oranan Tanpanitanon (vocals, piano), Noppadon Imocha (drums), Weera Mektippachai (guitar), Narisorn Charupawongse (guitar), and Somkiat Issariyawanich (guitar). Their music echoes that of Talkless, Neuter Lover, and even Yellow Fang, comprising ethereal female vocals in Thai and English over ambient and guitar-driven soundscapes.
Sheep Story is a thematically coherent EP that flows well in a single listening session and there’s good representation of most of the tracks on YouTube. My standout tracks from the eight-track song list are as follows:

Sheep Story is a thematically coherent EP that flows well in a single listening session and there’s good representation of most of the tracks on YouTube. My standout tracks from the eight-track song list are as follows:
- Drowning – The opening track features successive waves of noise and sound before cranking into a pulsating bass-driven number adorned with searing lead guitar riffs and confessional vocals.
- Dream – A slower song whose crystalline picked guitar strings mirror ghost-like female singing.
- If You – Pacey drum-work and acoustic guitars power this song into loops of ever-increasing electric intensity.
- Let Fall – My favourite track from the EP. Background noises, more acoustic guitars, and breathless vocals build in insanity to the perfect sonic storm of thunder, gunshots and epic six-string riffing. Without doubt an appropriate soundtrack for the impending environmental and societal collapse of this fragile planet we live on. Recommended!
